Lockout Tagout in India – How to Keep Your Employees Safe

Lockout tagout is an extremely useful safety procedure that can protect your employees from injury, but it’s not something you want to just read about and then forget about. Too many employers think they’ve done enough as long as they have written lockout tagout procedures in place, but simply writing down the procedure isn’t enough; you need to make sure that everyone who needs to know the procedure knows it completely and will follow it every time. Here are some additional lockout tagout procedures that your company should implement so your employees stay safe at work.

What is a lockout tagout?

A lockout tagout is a step-by-step process of shutting down equipment and removing power sources, then checking for hazards and deactivating any dangerous machinery. It is often used when maintenance or repairs are being done on the equipment. This procedure ensures that employees can work safely, without fear of accidents or injuries.

What are some best practices?

In the United States, most companies follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) lockout-tagout program. In this system, after a worker has finished working on a machine or piece of equipment, they must first place a lockout onto the machine’s controls before they leave. When they’re ready to return, they must also use a tag out procedure—to tag out being when an employee leaves the control panel and locks it behind them.

How can we stay compliant?

You might think that your employees are safe because they are in India, but you need to keep them safe just as much as if they were right next door. Lockouts and tagouts (L&T) must be implemented when working on machinery or performing maintenance at any facility. At lukkosafety, we make it our responsibility to provide lockout tags out, training, and audits for all of our customers in order to ensure compliance with international standards.
